Messengers of Truth

The head lines a few weeks ago struck me with disbelief and sadness. Charlie Kirk, a powerful advocate of truth, freedom and ultimately the gospel of Jesus was assassinated. While I had never known him personally, it broke my heart like I know it did so many others. My heart broke for his kids, who he loved so well that will never be held in his arms again, for his wife Erika to be left in this world without her best friend, and it broke for the injustice and evil that took place in America a land built on the foundations of free speech and the right to life. However in the midst of the breaking God poured His spirit out. Revival is sweeping through the land. There is hope in the midst of grief and a renewed passion for the faith. Because you can kill the messenger, but not the message. That is the power in the gospel, the power in Jesus, who is unshakeable.
I was reading 2 Timothy, a book that is filled with wisdom from Paul as he is imprisoned for his faith. He is encouraging Timothy, a young evangelist, to be compelled by the Spirit and never stop preaching the gospel. Paul writes, “ But I am not ashamed of it for I know the One in whom I trust and I am sure that He is able to guard what I have entrusted Him until the day of His return. Hold onto the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me, a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, who lives within you, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.” 2 Timothy 1: 12-14. Paul lived his life unashamedly preaching the gospel, even when it put him in prison, because of these key words “I know the One in whom I trust.” The Hebrew word for know is “yada,” which means to have an intimate relationship. Paul did not just have head knowledge about God and the gospel, He intimately knew the character of the Father, and so he trusted. Being unashamed is not the result of being unafraid. It is the result of the hours spent getting to know Jesus, to the place where you entrust Him with your life completely. Once we know our Creator, there is no excuse to be unashamed. Because He empowers us through His spirit. That brings us to the second part of the verse!
“Through the power of the Holy Spirit, who lives within you, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.” Once we learn to trust Him with our hearts, we discover He has entrusted us with SO much more. We have been entrusted with His name, with His love, with His power, and with the truth of the gospel. “Go out and make disciples.” Matt. 28:19. This is our mission that the King has assigned to each of us, not just pastors or people in ministry. We are Jesus’s representatives here on earth, what a humbling reality. People form perspectives about Jesus through how we interact as His ambassadors here on earth. Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we are to reflect the light of the Son of God. I find it so amazing that the moon is literally not capable of shining without the sun. Jehovah- Ori, meaning the Lord is Light, has masterfully designed that we can not shine without Him. We can not shine in our own strength. So here is what He is entrusting us with, to be His vessel, through His Spirit. We are not Charlie Kirk. We are called to be imitators of Christ, not of man. Don’t get me wrong, I have learned so much from Charlie Kirk's life, but God has designed each of His vessels uniquely. What the Creator has put inside you is powerful. You are so important in the tapestry of God's kingdom. You are so needed. You are here for such a time as this.
I love this quote from Katie Davis Majors, “I have learned that I will not change the world. Jesus will do that. I can, however, change the world for one person. So I keep loving one person at a time. Because that is my call as a follower of Jesus.” My greatest desire is to be faithful with all that my Heavenly Father has entrusted me with, to bring glory to His name. To be unashamed because I completely trust Him. I want to be His moon, reflecting daily His Sonshine into the darkness. Our King fills our cup to overflowing, so that we can overflow His life into the lives of those around us. Go love that one person today and change their world with the goodness of God, because you are empowered and entrusted with a message that is unstoppable. You are a messenger of truth in love.
